Who Are We?
What began as Martin Shuler building bed swings for friends and family in the summer of 2016 has since quickly transformed into something far bigger.
Today, The Bed Swing — comprised of Marty, Joey, Boyd, & Bryce — seeks to build the premier outdoor living experience for you and your family.
Located in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina, every single bed swing is handcrafted and built to order. That means that each of our bed swings begin life as individually hand-selected lumber from a local mill which is then carefully and masterfully transformed into the bed swing of your dreams.
What It Takes
Setting out to build the best swing is not an easy task. Every bed swing that leaves our shop is built with free-floating mortise and tenon joinery, a classic technique that creates an incredibly resilient and sturdy joint, meaning that there will never be any worry about your bed swing creaking, squeaking, or separating — whether in 5 months or 5 years.
Just as our bed swings are built and completed entirely in-house, so too are they finished. Our in-house paintbooth means that your bed swing can be finished in any paint or stain desired. Our painting process is extensive and laborous, but the results speak for themselves.
But every bed swing needs cushions, and for that we have designed an extensive collection of cushion packages using Sunbrella fabrics. As each cushion is sewn to order, every pillow is fully customizable. We can't wait to help you transform your outdoor living space with the highest quality bed swings available.
Marty Shuler
Born and raised on a dairy farm in Bowman, South Carolina, Marty could often be seen helping build barns and fences. Those early hands on experiences allowed him to gain invaluable experience as a craftsman which today shows itself in every single bed swing.
Marty's attention to detail is part of what separates The Bed Swing from the rest of the crowd; no corners are cut, no expense is spared, and no bed is delivered or shipped without first being looked over by him.
When not running The Bed Swing, Marty spends his free time with his daughter (and shop manager) Olivia, most often enjoying summer days at the pool or teaching her how to ride her bike.
Joey Cradock
The number of people who can transform raw lumber into genuine pieces of art are few, but Joey is no doubt amongst them.
Born and raised here in Charleston, South Carolina, Joey spent the latter half of his teenage years playing baseball and then working in construction. But when the opportunity arose for him to experiment with making furniture, he seized the chance.
What was once a simple job has now become something remarkable; every bed swing that leaves the woodshop on it's way to the paintbooth has been built in part or entirely by Joey. When you order a bed swing, you can rest easy knowing that your swing has been built by someone with incredible attention to detail and a true knack for woodworking.
Finding such joy in his work while maintaining such attention to detail is seldom seen, so it should come as no shock that most of Joeys free time is spent in the woodshop -- experimenting by building furniture of his own for family and friends.
Boyd Smith
The difference between a bed swing that leaves the woodshop and a bed swing that leaves the paintbooth can not be understated.
For that, we thank Boyd. Previously owning his own vehicle detailing business, Boyds attention to detail and incredible work ethic speak for themselves.
Currently studying Automotive Engineering and one day seeking to own his own auto repair shop, Boyd has all the makings of a true craftsman: a great work ethic, natural talent, and high standards. No bed leaves the paintbooth until Boyd is confident in its quality.
Bryce Campbell
Having worked at The Bed Swing for over 2 years, there's not one area of the business that Bryce has not been involved in at some point.
A jack of all trades, Bryce can be found wherever help is needed -- whether that is assisting finishing beds in the paint booth, managing The Bed Swings online presence, or building beds in the woodshop.
Born in raised in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, Bryce can most often be found in the outdoors pursuing his passion of adventure photography. Seeking an alternative to the classroom, it is no wonder then that Bryce traded an education in Forestry at Clemson University for something more tangible; helping our team handcraft a beautiful, timeless bed swing just for you.
